Responsibilities

The Dietitian’s responsibilities include planning and organizing work of considerable difficulty and responsibility under minimal supervision. They are also expected to participate in research and performance improvement studies to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the field.

The Dietitian is responsible for conducting nutrition assessments and evaluations for patients, which includes analyzing nutrient intake, activity level, appetite, intake of vitamins, minerals, nutritional supplements, and other complimentary alternative medicine usage. They also gather information on weight history, taste changes, feeding problems, food intolerance, food-drug interactions, unhealthy diet behaviors, socioeconomic and ethnic background, documented medical history, current diagnoses and medical treatment modalities, current drug therapy, and clinical signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies.

Additionally, the Dietitian applies the basic principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition support. They are also expected to apply principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy to plan, develop, and independently coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.

Conducting studies, analysis, and documenting findings to evaluate staff, food, nutrition supplements, feeding or meal alternatives and therapies, supplies, equipment, and service in order to improve the efficiency of the operation is also a responsibility of the Dietitian. They are required to stay updated on current food service systems management, principles, and practices within a healthcare environment.

The Dietitian is responsible for coordinating with the MTF Fitness Leaders to register and track patient participation and promoting optimal program participation for all active-duty members. They also develop, coordinate, and teach programs like the ‘Health Weight’ weight management program for beneficiaries and conduct additional nutrition classes for prenatal, General Dietary Management (GDM), Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP), hypertension and cholesterol management, and other nutrition programs, as needed for all beneficiaries.

Teaching dietary principles to all age groups from pediatric through geriatric, for any disease entity which may include but is not limited to weight reduction, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, gastrointestinal, coronary artery disease or hyperlipoproteinemia, prenatal and bariatric, is also a responsibility of the Dietitian. They are also expected to provide health promotion classes and programs for MTF departments, staff, active-duty members, and their beneficiaries.

The Dietitian is responsible for providing individualized medical nutrition therapy to include the inpatient wards and/or outpatient clinics. This includes a complete nutrition assessment of each patient adhering to Joint Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of American Dietetic Association (ADA) guidelines. They also closely monitor key laboratory values to revise diet therapy as necessary and request appropriate laboratory tests for patients to more accurately assess nutrient needs when current laboratory values are unavailable. The Dietitian also reviews diets prescribed by physicians, making necessary nutrient calculations, personalizing the diet for the patient’s lifestyle and nutritional needs, and making recommendations to physicians for changes in diet prescription as appropriate.

Qualifications

To qualify for the role of Dietitian, the candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree. They should be a graduate from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by ACEND. Alternatively, they should have completed a post-Baccalaureate degree Dietetic Internship Program of supervised practice (for a minimum of 1200 hours) accredited by ACEND.

The candidate should have at least one year of specialized experience in diet therapy after graduation. They must possess a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Dietitian in one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additionally, they should hold a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification. The candidate must also have the ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
