Primary Purpose of Position: The Population Health Data Analyst identifies, analyzes, and interprets population health data, uses data sources to support ongoing program and process needs, and produces reports to summarize findings. The Analyst will provide meaningful insights into behavioral health, physical health, and pharmacy data and will highlight areas of variation and disparity among member populations. This individual will assist in population health reporting and evidence-based program and goal development and evaluation. 

 

Role and Responsibilities:   

  • Analyze behavioral health, physical health, and pharmacy data to inform Impact and Development initiatives on population health metrics. 
  • Analyze data using HBI analytics, TruCare, Alpha MCs systems and other data sources. 
  • Analyze population health data to support evaluation activities and initiatives.
  • Maintain resource materials and data files. 
  • Determine credibility and usability of data prior to delivery of analytic results.
  • Validate data through methodical processes.   
  • Assist in design, implementation, and maintenance of standard internal and external (public) dashboards and population health reports.
  • Write database queries, create end-user reports, and apply varying analytical techniques to solve specific population health needs.
  • Extract information for trend analyses and dashboard reports. 
  • Structure analytical results in an organized, visual manner to tell a meaningful, actionable story.
  • Create recurring monthly and quarterly reports based on organizational needs.
  • Collaborate with team members to produce annual reports for the organization (e.g., Population Health Assessment, Social Determinants of Health reports). 
  • Review data related to Clinical Services goals and make recommendations for areas of improvement.
  • Respond to queries and data analysis requests by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve on project work groups and subcommittees.
  • Serve as site admin for assigned databases. 
  • Provide support within the organization for users of data management platforms. 
  • Collaborate with other departments to help identify areas of opportunity for improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to meet organizational and state reporting requirements. 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of managed systems of physical and mental health and substance abuse care. Knowledge of managed care practices and principles to provide services.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret healthcare claims data through complex analyses leading to strategic business decisions.
  • Working knowledge of data extraction and statistical methodologies.
  • Exceptional written and face to face communication skills.
  • Ability to tell a succinct, meaningful, and actionable story using data visualization and other techniques.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changes in both technology and business environments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical and functional problems.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance and security requirements related to healthcare data.
  • Ability to think within a quality systems framework. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills as evidenced by ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. 


Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in MS Excel, with proficiency using formulas, PivotTables, linked worksheets, graphing and other reporting and presentation features.
  • A working knowledge of industry coding (revenue codes, ICD classifications, CPT codes, etc.).
  • A working knowledge of industry terms (HL7, PHI, HIPAA, HITECH, etc.). 
  • Familiarity or proficiency in using Power BI for data visualization. 
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.


Education/Experience Required:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, data science, health informatics, statistics, or a related field.
  • 2 years’ experience or proven ability working as an analyst in the health care industry with medical claims, member data, and provider data.
  • 2 years’ experience or specialized training in managed care or healthcare with a focus on population health data/ analysis.

Education/Experience Preferred:  

  • Master’s Degree in public health, data science, health administration, health informatics, statistics or related field; business-oriented coursework and experience in collecting, interpreting, and reporting statistical data.
