The College of Architecture, Arts and Design at Virginia Tech is currently seeking a Collegiate Assistant Professor in Industrial Design. This position is effective August 2024 with an initial three-year appointment. The Collegiate Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching a range of classes from entry-level to upper-level courses in the Industrial Design program. The specific area of specialization is open, and the successful candidate will contribute to the program’s goals of environmental stewardship, health and wellness, technology and advanced manufacturing, equity, and community service. The position requires active participation in teaching, research, and service, with a focus on teaching and service. The ideal candidate will have a terminal or professional degree in Design or a related area, demonstrated ability to teach at the university level, and a broad understanding of design methods and theories. Duties and Responsibilities
The Collegiate Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at Virginia Tech is responsible for teaching a 3/3 course load of undergraduate design courses. This includes introductory to advanced level courses for in major courses, introductory courses in the Industrial Design Minor, and design courses offered to the general university population. The professor may also have the opportunity to teach online courses, based on the needs of the program. It is required for the candidate to be physically present in the local area for the position. Additionally, the professor is expected to contribute to the growth and success of the Industrial Design program through active participation in collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and diverse teaching and outreach initiatives. They will also contribute to curriculum development in areas of teaching and administration. Furthermore, the professor will be expected to engage in service and outreach activities at the school, college, and university levels, at a level appropriate for Collegiate Faculty. Finally, occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings may be required.
Required Qualifications
Candidates for the position of Collegiate Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at Virginia Tech are required to have a terminal or professional degree (MS, MA, MFA, MDes) in Design or a related area, which must be completed by August 2024 or the appointment start date. They must also have demonstrated ability to teach design and/or related fields at the university level. Moreover, candidates should possess a broad understanding of design methods and theories through professional experience. It is essential for candidates to show a demonstrated commitment to issues of inclusion and diversity, both within the classroom and in the discipline of Industrial Design overall. Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with experience teaching at the university level will be given preference for the Collegiate Assistant Professor position. Additionally, a demonstrated commitment to experiential teaching and learning pedagogies is highly desirable. Knowledge or experience in industrial design or product design, such as prototyping, sustainable materials, design ethics, UX/UI, or healthcare design, is also preferred. Moreover, candidates who can develop online courses or flexible learning course formats on an as-needed-basis by the program will have an advantage in the selection process.
