Scope of Work
The Scope of Work for the UX Designer position at Facing History and Ourselves is divided into three main areas: User and Learner Experience Design Consultation, User Research & Reporting, and Training & Knowledge Sharing.
User and Learner Experience Design Consultation (40%)
In this role, the UX Designer will collaborate closely with the Digital team to address design challenges and improve the user and learner experience on facinghistory.org. This includes developing wireframes and prototypes for new site content, features, or redesigns. The UX Designer will also be responsible for maintaining and updating documentation for components and templates, creating an accessible reference guide. Additionally, the UX Designer will develop a plan for quarterly audits of the user and learning experience on the website.
User Research & Reporting (30%)
The UX Designer will oversee diverse research activities to gather insights into user needs and preferences. This includes setting objectives, executing research plans, and generating qualitative and quantitative reports. The UX Designer will also conduct quarterly user experience listening sessions with key stakeholders to ensure that staff feel valued and heard. The insights gathered will be used to inform improvements to the website and to the overall user experience.
Training & Knowledge Sharing (30%)
As part of the role, the UX Designer will lead a multi-disciplinary working group on UX, LX, SEO, and accessibility. This will involve fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning by facilitating monthly sessions where each domain can tap into others’ expertise. The UX Designer will also curate a robust set of training materials and deliver monthly trainings on UX/UI best practices to keep the team updated on industry trends. Regular updates on UX improvements and strategies will be shared with the Digital team.
Essential Skills/Qualities
To be successful in this role, the selected UX Designer should possess the following skills and qualities:
- Proficiency in UX/UI design tools such as Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD to create intuitive and visually appealing designs.
- The ability to understand user needs and translate data insights into actionable design strategies.
- Knowledge of agile project management methodologies for efficient roadmapping and sprint planning.
- Familiarity with analytics tools, including SEO/SEM, HubSpot, Google Tag Manager, and Google Analytics to monitor and analyze user behavior.
- Experience with large-scale/enterprise use of Drupal, similar CMS, and associated governance to ensure a smooth user experience.
- The ability to conduct and analyze A/B tests and usability studies to validate design decisions.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate design concepts and collaborate seamlessly across departments.
- A basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to effectively collaborate with developers.
