Academic Professional: Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Design is seeking a Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist for the Print Lab. This professional will be responsible for managing all laboratory activities and printing services, including set-up, support, maintenance, and policy development. The Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist will also serve as the university representative for all correspondence related to the lab and equipment.
Duties of the Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist
The Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist will have various duties and responsibilities in three main areas: Engagement, Operations, and Facilities.
Engagement
In terms of engagement, the Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist will supervise and consult with students, faculty, and staff in the use of lab materials and equipment. They will work closely with CADA (College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts) faculty and administration to efficiently schedule lab access and authorization workshops. Additionally, the specialist will assess student and faculty needs while providing services and demonstrations for lab equipment and general use. They will also organize and provide training for School of Design students, as well as host workshops and/or demonstrations on how to use lab equipment for students and faculty.
Operations
In terms of operations, the specialist will update rules and regulations of the lab based on professor/course requirements. They will be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising Student Lab Fellows and Student Assistant Workers. This includes reviewing applications, conducting interviews, processing paperwork, and providing scheduling. Additionally, the specialist will train and work with student employees in the delivery of shop services and material preparation for class needs. They will also administer first aid, call in medical professionals when needed, and fill out Injury Reports. Other responsibilities include taking inventory, purchasing consumables and materials, overseeing the physical maintenance of tools and equipment, and implementing and organizing safety demonstrations.
Facilities
In terms of facilities, the specialist will keep current with print trends and technologies. They will consult with other Lab Specialists, Associate Directors, and the Facilities Committee on equipment and tool upgrades and needs. The specialist will also maintain a clean facility, clear of debris and obstructions. They will advise and assist in the development and execution of capital improvement projects involving the labs and instructional facilities. This includes submitting work orders for lab facility needs. The specialist will also work with Lab Specialists and school leadership on the preparation for events and special projects within CADA, as well as assist with the general preparation and maintenance of the building, classrooms, and studios.

Qualifications
To be eligible for the position of Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, with a master’s degree preferred. They should also have at least five years of experience in an architecture, design, or arts laboratory setting, or general printing practice with bookbinding experience. Ideal candidates will also have additional knowledge of various programming tools or languages for innovative production.
Salary and Application Process
The salary for the Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
