Job Description

The Assistant Professor of Architecture and Design in Interdisciplinary Design Foundations position at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s School of Architecture and Design is a tenure-track, probationary appointment. This is a full-time, 9-month position starting on August 1, 2024. The successful candidate will primarily work in the School’s common core first-year curriculum, which serves the Architecture, Interior Design, and Industrial Design programs. They may also provide support to the School based on their specific qualifications.

Responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Design in Interdisciplinary Design Foundations, the successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Instruct first-year undergraduates in design and theory across the School’s programs, including architecture, interior design, industrial design, and general education.
  • Establish a rigorous research agenda.
  • Enhance the first-year curriculum in alignment with the School’s pedagogical objectives and changing requirements.
  • Engage with the School’s academic programs, Architecture, Interior Design, and Industrial Design, on various matters, including but not limited to curriculum development, accreditation, program assessment, research, and advising.
  • Contribute to committee tasks, advise students, and participate in other School and University service activities.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • A terminal degree, such as an M.F.A., Ph.D., D.Des, or a master’s in architecture, interior design, industrial design, or a related field.
  • Aptitude for introductory design, design theory, and pathways beginning with hands-on making and media toward digital design. Areas of interest may encompass color theory, spatial design, ergonomics, and human-centered design principles, among others.
  • Potential for contributions to peer-reviewed scholarly and/or creative endeavors, with a clear direction in research and/or creative undertakings.
  • Aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of digital technologies and design communication curriculum.
  • Preferred: Understanding of ways to teach students with varied backgrounds.
  • Preferred: Evidence of mentorship and/or collaboration in peer-reviewed scholarly productivity.

The School
