Position Summary

The Assistant Professor of Data Visualization will play a crucial role as a research partner in an emerging Center of Excellence in Environmental & Oceanographic Sciences. This center connects various programs focused on research, coastal resiliency and sustainability, and community impact. These programs include the College of Marine Science, the Florida Center for Community Design & Research, and the Graphic Design Program and School of Art and Art History. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of powerful and accessible visual products and programs that provide a critical link between research programs and diverse stakeholder audiences.

Visual communication tactics are of utmost importance in research programs, as they enable effective communication of complex data and scientific findings. Therefore, the Assistant Professor should possess creative prowess and be able to demonstrate a promising research trajectory. The candidate should also be able to bridge the gap between data science and design practices. This role will involve teaching courses in graphic design and data visualization, conducting research, engaging in service to the university, and participating in curriculum and program development.

Responsibilities

Position Qualifications

Candidates must possess a terminal degree from an accredited institution in the field of specialization or have equivalent professional experience. They must also have a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. The preferred qualifications include a terminal degree in Graphic Design, Data Visualization, Visual Communication, Informatics, Architecture, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have a strong record of research productivity in graphic design and data visualization, experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, and an interest in marine science, data science, and diverse visual communication methods. Experience in translating scientific data for socially conscious purposes is also desired.
